Yep, the Hero7 Black is a fantastic action camera, and with the discharge of the GoPro Hero 8 Black, it’s now the intermediate action shooter within the GoPro range.
It’s aimed toward an equivalent market at the Hero7 Black. The cameras have a really similar spec, but the DJI features a front display and a better level of case-free waterproofing.
Power full 30 meters
As we noted in our review of the DJI Os mo Action that front display may be a true game changer and shows us just how important that sort of additional display is often.
Still, the GoPro has the spec to out-gun the DJI during a few key areas, which we’ll cover below. Unsure how GoPro’s action cameras compare to DJI’s?

Which casing feels that bit more premium than the plastics Os mo Action. The Hero7 Black is waterproof right down to 10 meters on its own, otherwise you can expand that to a powerful 30 meters with an optional GoPro waterproof housing.
News for pros
Plus, there’s a huge selection of compatible mounts (official GoPro branded and third-party mounts) and extras that employment with the Hero7 from the get-go. So, you’re buying into a really extensive, action-ready universe of accessories here.
One of our favorite features is the ability to record Time Warp videos. These use GoPro’s highly impressive image stabilization to make handheld, moving time lapses. They’re ideal for setting the scene, conveying a way of your time passing, or for adding creativity to an edited video.
Check out a fast Time Warp test we filmed below… GoPro Hero7 Black review: audio and video, The real star of the Hero7 Black show is Hyper Smooth stabilization, built-in electronic stabilization that permits you to ditch the gimbals and capture smooth, professional-looking footage all the time.
You do still get 4K video at a slick 60fps, also as 8x slow motion at Full HD. Crucially, the image quality is superb with vibrant colors and great dynamic range. The upper bit-rate and advanced color profile option are welcome news for pros.
Hyper Smooth works incredibly well, and doesn’t present any of the normal warping or artifacts found on older GoPro. It is, almost, the simplest auto-smoothing on the market thus far.
But it’s not thus far call at the front of the DJI Os mo Action that it’s a transparent winner — it’s just a small bit more natural. To accompany your improved video, sound recording capabilities have also been boosted here.
The built-in microphones are ready to capture more dynamic range (deeper lows, higher highs), and there’s built-in processing that targets and eliminates vibration sounds.
Check out the Hyper Smooth stabilization below (we’ve also tested it in additional extreme action scenarios):Just like the Hero6, there’s a touchscreen on the rear of the GoPro Hero7 Black, but the interface has been redesigned.
Features including Time
The menus, modes, and settings are far more simple to use now with intuitive gestures which will be picked up by anyone. You’ve also got voice control, which is handy once you can’t physically reach the display or are wearing gloves — as you would possibly be if you’re surfing, climbing or snowboarding.
When you hook up with the GoPro smartphone app you’ll have another cool feature to play with: live-streaming. When the Hero7 Black first launched you were only ready to send video on to Facebook Live (via your smartphone’s internet connection).
The GoPro Hero 7 Black was the foremost powerful action camera the corporate had created, until the Hero 8 Black was released. The Hero 7 Black remains a super action camera, though. We’re impressed by its digital Hyper Smooth stabilization, and the way easy it’s to use.
App support is way better than with its current main rival, the DJI Os mo Action, and it offers a slew of snazzy features including Time Warp, live streaming and voice control. The Hero7 Black also looks and feels nicer within the hand than the DJI Os mo Action.
